THE REALLY BIG SNATCH
This website is a private information site about photography, film and book projects that Kevin McCann started in the 1970's and were never finished because a fire destroyed thousands of negatives, photographic prints, film footage, years of research and the studio and darkroom where everything existed. This penman believes that the projects are equally if not more important today than 35 years ago. The projects have a historic perspective that sets the foundation for each story. The viewer will have to revisit the site to see how the projects progress. It will be fun.
The website title www.snatchingphantoms.com is derived from the book Moby Dick. In the first chapter "Loomings" third page in Melville writes " And still deeper the meaning of that story of Narcissus, who because he could not grasp the tormenting, mild image he saw in the fountain, plunged into it and was drowned. But that same image, we ourselves see in all rivers and oceans. It is the image of the ungraspable phantom of life; and this is the key to it all." The key to grasping those phantoms and snatching them from life to memorialize forever is the camera.
